Gisborne police have launched an investigation into the murder

Police in Gisborne have launched a homicide investigation following the death of a man in the early hours of Monday.

Police were called at 4.20am after the man was taken by ambulance to Gisborne Hospital with serious injuries, according to a police statement.

“Unfortunately, the man died soon after,” the message reads.

Initial police inquiries revealed that the man sustained his injuries at a residence in Tolerton Avenue, Elgin, Gisborne.

The residents of the neighboring house did not know that the presence of the police on their street was related to the investigation of the murder.

One woman said she hadn’t heard anything out of the ordinary overnight.

“The dogs didn’t even bark, they usually barked if something happened,” said a man who lives nearby.

Another resident said the occupants of the cordoned-off facility were older, middle-aged people, but he didn’t know them very well.

There is security at the address, and police officers will be present throughout the day while the scene is examined.

“Anyone who has information that can help the investigative team is asked to contact the police online or by calling 105, quoting case number 241028/4688,” the message reads.

“Information can also be given anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.”
