Care assistant shakes nine-week-old boy in horrifying attack | Great Britain | News

An assistant who violently shook a nine-week-old boy, causing him terrible injuries, faces a significant prison term. Jose Herreros, 26, attacked the baby by grabbing him, picking him up and violently shaking him at a house in Newtongrange, Midlothian.

The horrific incident, which took place between May 27 and 30, 2022, left the child with 11 broken ribs and both legs. Fortunately, Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard that the boy has made a full recovery from his injuries.

Herreros admitted to assaulting the child causing grievous bodily harm and endangering his life when he appeared in court on Thursday. On the eve of the court session, the prosecutor’s office drew up a written report on the attack on the child.

Fiscal MP Matthew Miller said that in May 2022, a childcare assistant was assigned to look after the child while the child’s mother was in hospital. The next month, a health worker visited the residence for a routine checkup and noticed a bruise on the child. right cheek

The boy was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital Edinburgh for an examination, where additional bruising was found on his cheek and nose. Medical staff conducted two “skeletal scans” of the child, revealing additional injuries, including three broken ribs and four fractures in each leg. reports Edinburgh Live.

The court heard medical professionals found “no plausible medical explanation” for the child’s injuries, concluding they were the result of abuse. Doctors said the child’s injuries indicated she had been “squeezed and rubbed hard,” possibly for as short as 30 seconds, and needed protection from further serious injury.

Later, the child was transferred to a foster family. Herreros later contacted authorities, confessing to his actions.

In an email to police on June 28, 2022, he wrote: “You can come and interview me, I think I did the ribs.”

“I used to shake (the baby) and when I heard it was shaking, I think it was me. It was years ago, but please come.”

During police questioning, he stated: “I swear on (the child’s) life, it wasn’t that hard.”

Sheriff Christopher Dixon granted Herreros bail, adjourning sentencing until next January to prepare social work reports.
