According to the fire department, officials confirmed that thousands of gallons were dumped into a creek near Richardson Street and that the creek flows through the city of Joaquin.

Officials said most of the debris has been collected and that crews will continue to work in the area to recover any additional material.

“This expensive cleanup operation is funded by the state and the matter has been turned over to state authorities for further investigation,” Joaquin told the VFD. “If you have seen anything suspicious in the area in the past few days, please contact the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office with information.”

Joaquin VFD said authorities are investigating the matter to the fullest extent of the law to apprehend the person or persons responsible.

“While there is no immediate risk to the environment and live fish have been seen in the stream, authorities will continue to monitor the situation closely.” informed the fire station. “Thank you for your vigilance and cooperation in helping to keep our community safe.”
