Labor Party suspends MP Mike Amesbury after video shows him punching man in street | Politics news

Mike Amesbury has been suspended by the Labor Party after CCTV footage showed him punching a man in the street.

A Labor Party spokesman said: “MP Mike Amesbury has been assisting Cheshire Police with their investigation following the incident on Friday night.

“As these investigations continue, the Labor Party has administratively suspended Mr Amesbury’s membership of the Labor Party pending the investigation.”

new video, obtained by MailOnline on Sunday afternoon showed the MP for Runcorn and Helsby punching a man who fell to the floor before punching him several times.

Three members of the public could then be seen approaching the two men and intervening.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: “Police have voluntarily interviewed a 55-year-old man under caution in relation to this incident. He has since been released pending further investigations.”

“Mike Amesbury has questions about his actions that he needs to answer and it is right that they should be thoroughly investigated,” a Tory spokesman said.

This happened after the previous shots, which went viral on social media on Saturdayshowed Mr Amesbury shouting at the man, who was lying on the floor, saying: “You will never threaten me again”.

Mr Amesbury pointed to the man and added: “Yes I am (the MP), yes I am and you will never threaten an MP again will you?”

In a statement on Saturday, the MP said he felt “threatened in the street after a night out with friends” and added that he “contacted Cheshire Police himself to report what happened during this incident”.

“I will not be making any further public comment but will of course co-operate with any inquiries if required by Cheshire Police,” he added.

Police previously said officers were called at 2.48am on Saturday to reports of an assault in Main Street, Frodsham.

Labor Party It previously said it was aware of the incident and that Mr Amesbury, who has been an MP since 2017, would “co-operate with any enquiries” made by police.

Asked if Labor was investigating, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson told Sky’s Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips program: “Mike Amesbury… went to the police.

“He is cooperating with any investigation they want to pursue,” she continued. “That’s the job of the police and we want to let them do that job.”

Sky News has approached Mr Amesbury and the Labor Party for comment.
