The face in question is that of Saint Joseph, seen in the upper left of the painting known as Madonna della Rosa (or Madonna Rosova).

Meanwhile, the other faces of the Madonna, Child and St. John are revealed to have been created by Raphael’s hands.

This new AI algorithm method shows that some of the strokes in the painting were made by another artist.

Mathematician and computer scientist Hassan Ughail from the University of Bradford said in a statement: “Using deep feature analysis, we used photographs of authenticated Raphael paintings to teach a computer to recognize his style in great detail, from the brushstrokes to the color palette. , shading and every aspect of the work.”

The statement added: “A computer can see much deeper than the human eye, down to the microscopic level.”

“When we tested della Rosa as a whole, the results were not conclusive. So, we then tested individual parts, and while the rest of the image was confirmed to be Raphael, Joseph’s face turned out to be most likely not Raphael,” Uhail said. .
