Man, 63, pleads guilty to boiling water and attacking wife with hammer while she slept at home – The Irish Times

A 63-year-old man has been taken into custody after he admitted to dousing his wife with boiling water and attacking her with a hammer while she slept at home. stopper townhouse earlier this year.

Noel Twomey, of Carbury Grove Knocknaheeny, pleaded guilty at Cork Circuit Criminal Court on Wednesday to two counts of assaulting his wife Jackie at their home on January 15 last year.

Twomey pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to Ms Twomey by pouring boiling water over her and another charge of assault causing harm to her by attacking her with a hammer.

Barrister Shay Roche SC applied for an adjournment to allow both a medical and psychiatric report to be prepared for his client, and Judge Helen Boyle granted the application.

Prosecuting attorney Emmett Boyle said in light of Twomey’s requests, he would seek a victim impact statement from Ms. Twomey. Judge Boyle adjourned the case until February 12 for sentencing.

Earlier this year gardaí set out the facts of the case when they objected to Twomey’s release on bail at Cork Circuit Court when one of the grounds for the objection was the seriousness of the charge.

The Police Department’s Brian Murphy said Twomey, who has been married to his wife of nearly 40 years, was still awake and watched her return home on surveillance video at about 3:30 a.m. that night.

The Murphy Police Department said Jackie Toomey later went to bed and fell asleep, after which the accused put a pot of water on the stove and armed himself with a hammer from the tool box.

“When the water boiled, Noel Twomey took a pan and a hammer and walked around the flat for a while before going into the bedroom,” Det Garda Murphy said.

“He continued to pour boiling water over his wife before hitting her repeatedly on the head with a hammer – he expressed surprise that she was able to jump up and leave the area.

“He also left the area and stopped a patrol car on Bakers Road. He was visibly covered in blood and he had a bloody hammer in a plastic bag.’

Det Garda Murphy said gardaí went to the house where crime scene officers cordoned off a bedroom and began a search after the property was declared a crime scene.

“This is very serious. She went to sleep in a safe bed. Noel Toomey made a very conscious decision to boil a pot of water and take a hammer out of his toolbox.

“He stated that he walked around the apartment 10-20 times, considering whether he would carry out his actions. He entered his bedroom where his wife was sleeping and cowardly attacked her while she slept.

“He showed no remorse and was never interested in his wife’s condition. He seems like a very controlling person. His actions were very disturbing and sinister.”
