Daiso Tiong Bahru Plaza outlet is closed on 18 November 2024.

Five years

The store, which first opened in 2019, announced the closure in early November in a social media post by Daiso Singapore.

The outlet was one of five that were allowed remain opened during the initial Covid-19 circuit breaker, although the chain later reversed its decision to open outlets amid pandemic restrictions on businesses that do not provide “essential” services.

Although Daiso’s social media post did not explain the reasons behind the outlet’s closure, speculation was rife in several circles.

AND Complaint Singapore users posted that they learned of the closure through a sign on the outlet’s wall, and some commenters were quick to blame the closure on high rents.

However, others had their own speculations, with one saying they had noticed the outlet was less used after a rival Japanese store opened in the same building.

Another suggested that Daiso’s price hikes had made the store less desirable to consumers and that the change from Daiso’s original “everything for S$2” pricing model had led to confusion.

One simply said it was probably due to the store’s lease expiring.

New stores are still opening

Despite these speculations, the closure does not appear to herald any particular demise for the popular Japanese store as it prepares to open a new outlet at Pasir Ris Mall on November 28.

Earlier in 2024, the company also opened a store in the nearby Great World City mall.
