Minister of Finance Nirmala Sitharaman responded to a request from a social network user to help the middle class.

A user identified as Tushar Sharma made his request on X in response to Sitharaman’s online post in which she shared poems written by a member of the erstwhile royal family of Travancore in The Sunday Guardian.

In his message, Sharma expressed his understanding of the challenges facing the government but made a “heartfelt plea” for some form of relief for the middle class.

Finance Minister admits concern for middle class

Sitharaman acknowledged Sharma’s concerns and said his input was valuable.

She replied: “Thank you for your kind words and understanding. I recognize and appreciate your concern.”

She described the government as “listening to people’s voices and listening to them”, adding: “Your input is valuable.”

Rising Inflation Concerns in India

The exchange between Sharma and Sitharaman comes against a backdrop of growing inflationary concerns among India’s middle class, which makes up about 2% of India’s population.

Retail inflation stood at 6.21% last month, exceeding the Reserve Bank of India’s upper limit.

Food inflation also rose to 10.87% last month from 9.24% in September, according to the National Statistics Office (NSO).
