The case was registered following a sexual harassment complaint filed by a Bengali actress.

According to Mathrubhumi News, Ranjith has been charged under Sections 354 and 509 of the IPC.

The actress filed a formal complaint against director Ranjith on August 26, 2024, alleging sexual harassment against her. According to her complaint filed with the Kochi City Police Commissioner, she alleged that the incident took place in a flat in Kadavantra in 2009.

Serious allegations have been leveled by several female actors against prominent figures in the industry, including director Ranjith and actors Mukesh, Jayasuriya and Edavela Babu, among others.

The surge of these accusations occurred after the dismissal of the judge Hema Committee Reportwhich exposed disturbing reports of harassment, exploitation and systematic abuse of women in the industry.

The report, released on August 19, after redacting the names of witnesses and the accused, said the Malayalam film industry is controlled by about 10-15 male producers, directors and actors who dominate and control the industry.
