Statement by SS Kumaran

Now director-producer SS Kumaran has issued a letter claiming that the title of Vignesh Shivan’s LIC film was actually registered to him (Suma Pictures in 2015) and though he didn’t give him permission, the director used the title for his film Pradeep Ranganathan. This issue was already raised by SS Kumaran in December 2023.

In a letter made public on Saturday afternoon, SS Kumaran wrote, “Dhanush has sent you a formal notice for using three seconds of the video without his permission. However, your husband used the LIC name for his, even though he knew it was registered to my production house. He asked my permission through someone, but I did not give it. Nevertheless, he went ahead and marketed the film as LIC. How do you justify that?”

More details

The director-producer went on to add that the name LIC and its history have a confusing connection, and as a result he politely refused permission. He stated that despite this, Vignesh Shivan was going ahead with a “what can you do?” attitude. “In what God’s forum will Vignesh Shivan answer this?” Kumaran asked.

“You patiently waited two years for permission from someone more powerful than you to use this material, but you trampled me because I am a small producer. This made me very sad and you need to answer for it in God’s forum. I went through so much emotional turmoil and pain because of what you did and it also affected my film,” he stated. “Every filmmaker spends time and money on their films, and if you want to use anything for your business purposes, you have to understand that you have to get permission legally and through the right procedures. You are not doing anything for free but trying to use our footage/credits for free, which is a terrible trend you and your husband are trying to set in the film industry.”
