FALL RIVER — A Fall River man was sentenced today on charges of first-degree murder in the 2021 shooting death of two people, authorities said.

Jeremy Holmes was found guilty of two counts of first degree murder for the murders of Jovan Mills and Miguel Sanjuro.

The sentence also included charges of assault and battery with a firearm and carrying a firearm without a license.

The jury returned the verdict after a trial in Bristol County Superior Court.

The incident, which occurred in broad daylight on May 18, 2021, prompted an extensive investigation by the Fall River Police Major Case Unit in cooperation with Massachusetts State Troopers from the Bristol County District Attorney’s Detective Division.

The joint efforts of Major Case Detectives and the State Police Detective Division led to a thorough investigation that ultimately led to the successful prosecution of the case by the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.

In a statement, the Fall River Police Department expressed its deepest condolences to the families and friends of Mills and Sanjuro, acknowledging that while the conviction cannot bring back the lives lost, they hope it will provide some measure of closure.

The department also praised the cooperation of officers from the patrol bureau and major case division in the case, as well as the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office for their role in securing the conviction.
