Police have arrested a Pittsburgh man in connection with a shooting that left an elderly man critically injured Wednesday in the Larimer neighborhood.

Rovil Yamil Brito Chirinos, 25, is accused of shooting a 70-year-old man in the stomach and stealing his wedding ring and some cash outside Corner View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center about 12:30 a.m. in the 6600 block of Frankstown Avenue.

According to the complaint filed by Pittsburgh police, the bullet that lodged in the victim exited through his back. He was able to make his way from his pickup truck to a hospital and rehab facility, where he provided a description of his attacker. He was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition, police said.

According to the complaint, the victim told paramedics he was visiting his brother at the Corner View Center when he was robbed and shot.

As the victim slowly walked toward the entrance of Corner View, the suspect was seen fleeing down Washington Boulevard, police said.

On Friday, city detectives stopped and arrested a man in the 6500 block of Frankstown who matched a video image of the suspect, police said. During the questioning of the man at the police station, detectives seized a gold ring that he had removed from a gold necklace.

Police said they seized the ring because it was important evidence in the case and could have been swallowed or hidden by the suspect.

According to the complaint, a witness at a pawn shop about a block away from where the man was arrested told police that the same man tried to pawn a similar ring at the store but was denied because the store staff could not verify that it was made of gold.

The victim’s son recognized the ring as his father’s engagement ring, police said.

Police arrested Brito Chirinos on charges of attempted murder, reckless endangerment, aggravated assault and robbery. He was awaiting a preliminary hearing.

The suspect identified himself as “Rule Brito” during the arrest, police said. According to the complaint, the police learned his real name after talking to the border guard.
