Two teenagers killed, one in critical condition, as their speeding SUV crashes into a parked truck near Tengpora – on camera

Two teenage boys were killed and two others injured after their car rammed into a parked truck and then crashed into a watershed in Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir. The crash has sparked calls for tough action against under-age drivers in the Valley.

The accident took place on Thursday at Tengpore on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway when four teenagers, all students of Class 11 of DPS Srinagar, were involved in an accident when one of the SUVs rammed into a stationary dump truck before crashing into a divider. According to news agency PTI, one of the injured students is in critical condition.

The boys attended the same school and were reportedly participating in the school’s annual day-long event, after which they would drive off in two separate Thar SUVs. Then they staged an impromptu highway race. When they reached Tengpora, one of the SUVs lost control and rammed into a truck parked on the road before crashing into a divider.

The entire accident was caught on CCTV and showed Tar smashing into a parked truck. The video is actively spreading in social networks.

The dead 17-year-old boys have been identified as Hamaada and Aseema Sofi, while two others who were injured are undergoing treatment at a hospital in Srinagar.

After the incident, several people, including politicians, expressed regret over the loss of life and sparked public calls to ban minors from driving.

CM Omar Abdullah expresses regret and urges to follow traffic rules

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that our traffic experience is not improving.

“Heartbreaking visuals. This accident claimed the lives of the previous young people and had a devastating effect on their families. My heart goes out to the families of the boys who died in this tragic accident. May Allah grant them a place in Jannat,” Abdullah said in a post on X.

In his post, he said: “Our cars are getting faster, our roads are getting better, but our sense of traffic is not improving. Speed is exciting, but it kills without remorse. The rules of the road exist for a reason, they protect us, but only if we follow them.”

Apni Party President Altaf Bukhari has expressed concern over the surge in road accidents, especially those caused by reckless driving, demanding a complete ban on driving by minors.

Bukhari: “It’s heartbreaking to see the pictures of the boys who died in the recent accidents in Lavaypore and Tengapora, leaving their families, especially their parents, devastated.” said in a post on X.

“Strict action against traffic violators, a total ban on underage driving and a comprehensive awareness campaign are urgently needed,” Bukhari said.

Srinagar SSP Traffic appeals to parents not to encourage minors to drive

Srinagar City Traffic Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Muzaffar Shah appealed to parents not to allow minors to ride two or three wheelers. He also noted that parents are responsible if a child has access to a car without a driver’s license.

“All four children who were in the vehicle attended the same school. The important question is, how did the parents allow access to the four-wheeler if the boys are minors? That is the biggest question. If there was no access, this unfortunate accident would not have happened “, he said.

“The (CCTV) footage shows that they were speeding. If there was no speeding, maybe their evasion could have given them a chance and saved them,” said Shah.
