Tesla could face fines after a chemical spill at its Palo Alto facility entered the city’s drainage system.

A glowing liquid, which the Palo Alto Fire Department says is a harmless mixture of borax, lye and green dye, spilled from a Bay Area office.

City resident Mike Hedblom first discovered the leaking fluorescent lights during an evening walk last Thursday, prompting him to upload the video to an online portal.

After he did not get through to the city number because of the weekend, he contacted the police.

Although it has since been cleaned up, officials said they would investigate the spill because Tesla, which is owned by Elon Musk, does not have a permit to store sodium hydroxide.

Talking to SFGateHedblom said: “I didn’t know what it was. But I didn’t think it was right.”

Hedblom said Tesla employees also responded to the scene using absorbent pads to clean it up.

He said their “very basic” materials were not enough to clean up the spill and a fire engine later arrived.

According to the Oct. 18 spill report, the liquid was “used for a cooling system to cool Tesla’s artificial intelligence supercomputer.”

It said the spill occurred when Tesla personnel were draining the system, a mixture that affected the storm drain, gutter and Matadero Creek.

The report continued, “The Palo Alto Fire Department removed approximately 550 gallons of the mixture from the storm drain.

“The incident occurred while Tesla personnel were draining the system.”

According to a post on the city of Palo Alto’s website, Tesla said it released only 12 gallons of liquid, saying the rest was water.

City officials said the liquid was able to escape through a canal to nearby John Bulwer Park, where it was contained without touching any “natural areas.”

The post added: “In addition to the cleanup, an investigation into the cause is ongoing. Storage of sodium hydroxide requires a city permit, which Tesla did not receive.”

City officials also determined the substance does not pose a “risk to life or health,” but the National Institutes of Health says sodium hydroxide is toxic if ingested.

It also states that it is corrosive to metals and fabrics and can irritate the skin, eyes and mucous membranes.

City officials said Thursday: “At the conclusion of this incident, staff will complete an investigation, followed by appropriate regulatory action, including restitution and cleanup costs, and possible fines.”
