After the fire in western Edmonton, the camp was dismantled

A camp has been cleared after a large fire in west Edmonton, police said Friday.

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) said the camp near 184th Street and 105th Avenue consisted of four structures, including one with insulated floors and walls, and several open fire pits.

EPS said it was discovered after Edmonton Fire and Rescue Services reported a “large” fire.

In a video released by police, debris and construction materials can be seen strewn across several areas in a wooded area near Anthony Henday Street.

Several propane tanks are visible, along with an area of blackened ground and trees and an active open fire.

Police did not say when the camp was discovered, but said Friday that the structures had been demolished and that the cleanup of the site was expected to continue for several more days.

EPS said police found a cattle prod, two replica pistols and “nearly a dozen” knives.

A 48-year-old man who lived at the camp was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct over $5,000. Police said he has a “history of property crimes.”

A 33-year-old woman was also found in the camp. She and her husband were referred to housing through the Human-centred Engagement and Liaison Partnership Unit (HELP).

The officer said the woman had accepted access to the services of the navigation support center.
