Bose turns to Kith’s Ronnie Fieg to rework the Classic 901 speakers

Bose turns to Kith’s Ronnie Fieg to rework the Classic 901 speakers

God is celebrating 60 years in business by bringing back the speaker system that helped put it on the map.

The Massachusetts-based audio company is working on an updated version of its first stereo speaker, the 901. That would be exciting enough on its own, but the brand has made a tab CatRonnie Fieg to help review the design.

Introduced in 1968, the 901 was company founder Amar Bose’s attempt to create a speaker system that could reproduce the sound of a live concert in the listener’s home. The unconventional system consisted of two floor-standing speakers with nine speakers each (eight of which were directed to the rear panel) and an active equalizer, which were intended for shared use only. The 901 was something of a hit and sold for 48 years before its fourth iteration was discontinued in 2016.

News of Fig’s involvement in the project comes from no less reliable a source than the founder of Kith himself. In a post on Instagram earlier this week he wrote that he and designer Mark Jupiter collaborated on the speakers. Fieg’s post didn’t include audio, although he called for the original 901’s use of “direct and reflective sound” to provide an immersive listening experience, but it did include photos showing a mid-century modern look that will be familiar to anyone who’s ever seen the original settings later, Bose shared that the revived system will be available in two wood finishes — bleached ash or natural air-dried walnut.

Why did Bose choose Fig to collaborate with? Well, the designer has shown his special skill in subtly mixing classic designs, be it sneakers, watches or even cars, in a way that highlights what makes them so special. The audio company saw this firsthand when it collaborated with Kith on a special edition pair of its own Ultra-open headphoneswhich, surprisingly, quickly sold out.

Technical details are not all we are waiting for. Bose has not yet announced when the new 901 will be available or how much it will cost. Our guesses abound, especially after BMX rider and Bose partner Nigel Sylvester revealed that only 12 units would be available in a video posted on his Instagram account.
