The driver of the tram that crashed into a store in Norway says he lost consciousness before the accident

OSLO, Norway (AP) — Norwegian police said Friday that a tram driver who derailed and crashed into a store last month in central Oslo, after causing minor injuries to four people, told them he had lost consciousness and had no memory of the accident.

Police said they interviewed the tram driver, whose name has not been released, who told them he felt sick and passed out before the crash. In a statement, police in the Norwegian capital said they were awaiting the results of a technical examination by the Norwegian Security Agency before drawing any conclusions.

About 20 people were in the four-car carriage when it derailed on October 29 at the Storgata intersection, one of Oslo’s most important streets near the main train station.

Witness Monsin Munir saw a tram coming towards him at high speed. He was supposed to turn left, but he derailed and continued straight to the store.

He told Norwegian broadcaster TV2 that he was standing outside the shop where he works and “saw the tram go straight into Eplehuset (shop) at full speed”.

Police and the fire department said the accident caused extensive damage to the store.

The tram driver is among the injured. Police reported that everyone was treated at the scene, but no one was seriously injured.

The four-story building was later evacuated to check for structural damage.

Oslo public transport company Sporveien says the tram system carries around 50 million passengers a year.
