A New York detective is found guilty in a case of driving while intoxicated

Mineola, New York. An NYPD detective pleaded guilty Wednesday to aggravated assault and other charges in connection with a 2023 drunken-driving crash on the Meadowbrook Expressway that injured two women, the district attorney’s office announced Nassau County District Attorney Ann T. Donnelly.

George Moore, 40, pleaded guilty to charges including aggravated vehicular assault, second- and third-degree assault and aggravated driving while intoxicated. The plea comes more than a year after the Aug. 4, 2023, crash that occurred as Moore drove to work in Queens after a night of drinking in Rockville Center.

“George Moore was heavily intoxicated after a night out in Rockville Center, but still got behind the wheel of his Mercedes, speeding down the Meadowbrook State Parkway and putting countless lives at risk,” it said. in a statement from prosecutor Donnelly. “His selfishness and reckless disregard turned the lives of two innocent women upside down and put him on the wrong side of the law.”

Investigators determined that Moore was under the influence of alcohol and driving aggressively when he rear-ended a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the center lane of the park. The impact caused Moore’s Mercedes to hit its median, overturn and crash into a tree before coming to rest engulfed in flames.

The female passenger in Moore’s car suffered serious injuries, including broken wrists, broken feet and broken spine. The driver of the jeep sustained back, shoulder and knee injuries. Moore himself received numerous fractures, including the bones of the pelvis, arms and legs.

The defendant surrendered to the New York State Police on February 28, 2024, after an investigation revealed that he had been drinking at several bars prior to the accident.

Moore is scheduled to be sentenced on January 21, 2025, and is expected to serve three to six years in prison.
