Raspberry Pi Computing module 5 (CM5) has been spotted in the wild. This unannounced compact, optimized version of the Pi 5 will apparently be shown at Electronica 2024 in Munich, which runs until tomorrow. Twitter user / X Fernando shared a photo of the CM5 and a glimpse of its I/O board, which was quickly retweeted by prominent Pi fan Jeff Girling.

Given this high-profile public showing of the CM5, it’s probably fair to expect an imminent official launch, although Raspberry Pi hasn’t released any information on timing, availability or other details. Reading the thread of the source, we note that the new generation compact Pi was presented at the stand of Avnet, the owners of such Pi distributors as Farnell, Newark and element14. Eben Upton also made a special appearance at the Avnet booth on Wednesday.

we reviewed the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 (CM4) in 2022, and the availability of CM5 seems overdue. Those familiar with the relationship between full-sized Raspberry Pis and their CM counterparts won’t be surprised to see that the new CM5 clearly contains the same Broadcom BCM2712 as the familiar Raspberry Pi 5, but what other key similarities exist and how it works. different from CM4? Hopefully our table of information gleaned from Electronica 2024 photos about the CM5 and I/O board will clear up a few questions.

Also note that the CM5 IO board has a fan connector for Raspberry Pi 5 fans.

Overall, it’s nice to see the balance of new processing power and features coming to the CM5 and the new I/O board. This means that any previous projects you may have worked on and designed around CM4 should work with CM5. If your project benefits from faster performance or more computing resources, such as additional memory and storage, you’ll also enjoy the compact size.

For pricing, availability, and any other details on the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5 and the new IO Compute Module 5 board, you’ll have to wait for now. With CM5 making such a showing, it can’t be too long before official announcements and reviews arrive.
