Miami police have arrested a suspect in connection with a shooting in Allapattah

MIAMI – Miami police have arrested a suspect in connection with an October shooting in the Allapattah area that left one person injured, authorities confirmed Thursday.

Police said officers were initially dispatched to a home near the 1800 block of Northwest 42nd Street on Oct. 24 after a report of a shooting, where they found a man with a lacerated wound to his right elbow.

Detectives said the victim refused medical transport, but he shared his account of the incident with officers, describing the collision, which he said left him “fearing for his life.”

A Miami police officer who arrived at the scene said the victim was sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle outside the residence when she noticed a white or beige pickup truck speeding toward her.

According to the victim, the truck came to an abrupt halt and the driver, identified by police as 23-year-old Rolando Noel Canales, jumped out and started shooting.

The victim told detectives he quickly got out of his car and ran to the back of the residence to avoid being hit, while he believed a second person standing by the front door of the home was likely the intended target, the report said.

Detectives said they later found six spent shell casings that belonged to a .380 caliber handgun.

A red 2017 Buick parked nearby was hit three times and had bullet holes in the driver’s window, door frame and front windshield, according to the arrest report.

Investigators searched the area and found surveillance footage from a nearby Ring camera at the home where the shooting was reported.

Police later confirmed that Ring’s camera did not capture the shooting itself. However, they said the second victim reported hearing several gunshots and ran to the back of the property, although he did not see who fired the shots.

A second victim later mentioned that Canales may have been involved with a woman named “Meche,” a mutual acquaintance whose ex-boyfriend was in prison, according to investigators.

A few weeks earlier, police said the second victim and his incarcerated friend were having a three-way conversation with Meche when an unknown man, believed to be Canales, joined the conversation and began swearing at them, according to investigators.

After reviewing available evidence, crime scene technicians took photos of the scene and recovered a black iPhone near the victim’s vehicle that authorities believe belonged to Canales.

According to police, the second victim reported seeing Canales get out of the car and start shooting at him several times, forcing him to duck under the dashboard for cover. He said he saw the truck drive away for a moment after the shooting stopped.

In their statement, the law enforcement officers claim that the victim explained that his friend’s ex-girlfriend knew the shooter and had recently visited their residence. The victim believed that Canales may have acted out of jealousy, suspecting that his friend and the woman were spending time together while he was at work, investigators confirmed.

That same day, detectives showed the victim a photo ID in which he identified Canales as the shooter, police said.

Canales was taken into custody without incident around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

Later in the afternoon, detectives read Canales his Miranda rights before conducting an interview. Police said he denies the charges but did not provide further details about his whereabouts at the time of the shooting.

Jail records show he is charged with attempted murder with a firearm.

As of Thursday, Canales was being held without bond at the Metrowest Detention Center.

The motive for the shooting remains unknown at this time.
