Perak MB Saarani clarifies position on Chinese flag display in West Teluk Intan

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 — Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad has clarified his position on the recent incident involving a group displaying a Chinese flag at an event in Teluk Intan, saying his earlier comments were misunderstood.

In a statement issued today, Saarani said the Perak government’s position is simple: no activity in any organization or gathering is considered offensive as long as it complies with existing Malaysian rules and laws.

“It is a crime for any Malaysian citizen to fly a foreign flag as it is considered glorification of other countries.

“However, it is not unusual for foreigners to fly their national flag abroad, as can be seen at many gatherings, including sporting events,” the statement said.

In the same statement, Saarani also called on authorities to investigate the incident, regardless of who was involved.

“The police are investigating this matter and all parties must trust the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and take strong action if there is a breach of existing rules or laws.”

Saarani told reporters yesterday that there was no problem with people from China flying their national flag, comparing it to Malaysians displaying the Jalur Gemilang abroad.

However, he then emphasized that such actions must comply with the rules and laws of the country.

Persatuan Kebudayaan Guan Gong chairman Sun Boon Hua also clarified on Facebook that the flag raising during the Guan Gong festival was unplanned and done by Chinese citizens, not Malaysians.
