Mysterious Mastercard data leak prompts bank warning as customers are urged to “pay close attention” to money movements

Bank of America is warning customers about a “hack” that may have compromised Mastercard account numbers and other financial data.

Eagle Bank of Maryland says it received a notification from Mastercard that an unnamed US merchant allowed unauthorized access to account information between August 15, 2023 and May 25, 2024.

Bank discovered violations in the documentation to the government of the state of Massachusetts.

“MasterCard has notified us of a security breach in a merchant’s network in the United States. Your MasterCard debit card information was among the records that could have been exposed.

The breach resulted in Mastercard account numbers and account details being potentially compromised and in the possession of unauthorized individuals…

The incident did not in any way compromise the security in place at Eagle Bank and did not have a direct impact on your account records at our institution.”

Eagle Bank encourages customers to “pay close attention” to monthly checking statements over the next 12 to 24 months to identify unauthorized transactions.

The bank also cancels existing debit cards and issues new ones.

As of the end of 2023, Eagle Bank conducted Total assets $615 million.
