Ashley Jenkins says her family’s 3-year-old Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix named Harley was brought into her routine care back on July 12.

But the family’s life changed in an instant when Hunt called to say the dog had died in his care.

“(He said) she just died suddenly and that her heart just stopped, which didn’t make sense because she wasn’t even 4 years old,” Jenkins said.

They immediately called 911 and met the police at the scene. According to court documents obtained by Action News, when officers arrived to speak with Hunt, he allegedly became “stressed” and tried to delete evidence from his phone.

After he resisted arrest, he was lowered to the ground.

A search warrant executed later in the evening at the business led to the seizure of dozens of small plastic bags containing suspected heroin, authorities said. Some of the bags reportedly had “Alien rock” and “House party III” written on them.

In the indictment, authorities said fentanyl was among the drugs in Hunt’s possession.

Jenkins says the dog had no health issues, adding that “it wasn’t her health that caused her death.”

The family told Action News on Friday that an autopsy did not reveal the cause of the dog’s death, but witness statements helped support animal cruelty charges.

In the charging documents, authorities allege that Hunt negligently caused the death of a living animal by failing to provide the living animal with the necessary care as a person otherwise required to care for the living animal.

He is being held in the Salem County Jail.

Hunt became the new owner of K9 Kingdom. The previous owner died last summer.
