Hong Kong to study buying flu vaccine for family doctors due to supply problems: official

Hong Kong’s health authority is considering purchasing flu vaccines for family doctors participating in the vaccination scheme to ensure supply is stable in the private market, a senior official said.

Deputy Health Minister Dr. Libby Lee Ha-Yun said on Friday that the government was aware of supply problems for private doctors in previous years. Hong Kong authorities have launched their vaccination scheme ahead of an expected winter surge in infections.

“We know that there has been some volatility in the supply of influenza vaccines in the private market,” Lee told lawmakers.

“Whether or not our Office of Strategic Procurement should consider the amount needed by the private sector when purchasing flu vaccines is something we are currently discussing.

“I hope that next year the supply will be more stable.”

There are currently two main flu vaccination schemes in Hong Kong. The government vaccination program offers free doses to eligible groups, such as children and people aged 50 and over, at government clinics and hospitals, as well as outreach programs at homes for the elderly.
