1-month-old boy starved to death in New York, police launch homicide investigation: officials

A month-old Staten Island boy starved to death over the summer, officials said this week, and the month-old case has been ruled a homicide.

The infant, identified as Joseph Geben Jr., of Main Street near Craig Avenue in Tottenville, died of “complications of severe malnutrition,” the city medical examiner said Wednesday.

NYPD officers arrived at Staten Island University Hospital South Campus around 7 a.m. on July 20, where hospital staff told them the child had arrived unconscious and unresponsive, police said.

He died of his injuries in the hospital.

Police have now launched an investigation into the murder, although no arrests had been made as of Wednesday, authorities said.

It was also not clear whether the child’s parents were questioned.

In a similar case last month, Laron Modlin, 25, and Nitavia Ragsdale, 26, were both arrested in Harlem. the starvation death of their 4-year-old son Jah’Meik Modlinthe authorities said.

Ragsdale pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder at her arraignment in Manhattan Supreme Court on Wednesday.
