Xpeng describes new AI Turing chip for its future cars - equivalent to 3 Nvidia Orin X chips or 2 Tesla FSD chips

Xpeng showed off its proprietary Turing AI chip, which it plans to use in its future products, including cars, flying cars and even robots. As reported CarNewsChinaXpeng CEO He Xiaopeng said he believes artificial intelligence will play a big role in changing the role, and he wants his company to be a pioneer in the field.

During his speech recently Event for Artificial Intelligence DayHe said the new chip has a 40-core processor that can run large models with 30 billion parameters locally. In addition, there are two integrated neural processing units (NPUs), as well as a domain-specific architecture for neural networks. He added that a single Turing AI chip has the equivalent capabilities of three Nvidia Orin X chips or two Tesla FSD chips.

The new chip will provide what the company calls AI Car Safety Plus, as well as independent safety islands and real-time vehicle safety detection. It features two independent image signal processors (ISPs) that are said to be able to handle low-light situations such as dark nights, rainy days and backlighting.

With all these processing issues in mind, Xpeng says it will no longer need a separate human-machine interface (HMI) chip, as the Turing chip is capable of handling intelligent driving functions as well as other car systems. Different versions will be developed depending on the purpose, and future cars are said to receive at least three such chips.
