After 26 years, an arrest was finally made in the case of the murder of a young woman.

Sarah Jane Carr, who was just 28 years old, was shot to death on the night of July 9, 1998 near 14th Street and McDowell Road.

Although the suspect was initially known only by his nickname, Phoenix police homicide detectives were investigating the case.

In 2016, detectives identified the suspect as Javier Lorenzano-Nunez, now 58, according to Phoenix police. After the murder, Lorenzano-Nunez spent years in California and Mexico. Investigators worked with the Maricopa County District Attorney’s Office to obtain an indictment and an outstanding homicide arrest warrant.

On October 23, 2024, the Department of Justice and the US Marshals Service extradited Lorenzano-Núñez from Mexico to Phoenix, where he was taken into custody by the Phoenix Police Department.

Phoenix police said: “The suspect in the murder of Sarah Carr will now face responsibility and charges related to his actions in July 1998.”
