Predictions, picks, best bet – Yankees vs. Dodgers – Game 1 of the World Series

This is another edition of the Fall Classic, when two giants – the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers – will meet in the World Series.

Predictions for tonight’s Yankees game against the Dodgers predict that Gerrit Cole will fly out early against a powerful Los Angeles lineup. First pitch is scheduled for 8:08 PM ET at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, with the game televised on FOX.

Who Will Win Yankees vs Dodgers Game 1?

I’m leaning toward the Dodgers, and home field advantage is what mostly pushes me over the edge. There is little to separate things beyond that. In my World Series preview, I noted how multiple players in the lineup would determine the tilt for two evenly matched teams. In this case, I suspect the Dodgers’ “other” non-Star players will have a better chance of doing so given the pitching matchup.

How will Judge and Ohtani fare in Game 1 of the World Series?

I like Ohtani’s matchup here more than the umpires, given the kind of pitcher he sees on the mound. Gerrit Cole has improved his game in the playoffs, but hitting the ball hard has been an issue for him this season. You can’t ignore that as the matchup against Ohtani is coming up.

As far as the judge is concerned, it’s a real coin toss. Overall, I suspect he has a good World Series because I trust the data behind what he has done throughout his career. However, a matchup with Jack Flaherty could be difficult.

My analysis
We’ve had great support throughout these playoffs Gerrit Cole. A big part of that was built on him having decent at-bats, and I was questioning the veteran pitcher in the postseason. It worked for our two bets on him.

However, in this match, Cole gets a Los Angeles Dodgers a lineup uniquely designed to punish his weaknesses this season. His impressive last start against them also gave us value. I’m not sure if he gets shelled or even gets off to a very bad start; however, my strongest point about this game is that he struggles to be economical with his innings. My best bet is under 15.5 outs.

Before we discuss why, it’s worth noting that this is a certain market pattern. Places like DraftKings and BetRivers have it down to -180 at press time. That’s a lot for us considering our fair price is -182. This is a significant advantage, and therefore it will be a serious bet for me.

No team in baseball is built to target a pitcher with walking issues more than the Dodgers. This has been the foundation of their franchise for the last few years and it continues this season. Los Angeles enters this game tied for No. 1 in the playoffs in walks per game with six and tied for second overall on the season. Additionally, Los Angeles’ numbers have shown them to be very patient, ranking second in baseball in run rate; given that the Dodgers should only New York on both counts, it’s easier to argue that Cole hasn’t played against a more patient team all season. This is a problem.

This is a problem for many reasons. Cole has been inconsistent all season, best evidenced by his previous start. That’s when he struck out four Guards batters and lasted just 4 1/3 innings. That’s what he did for most of the season, with a below-average walk rate and being a chase-reliant pitcher, getting some of the lowest pitches of his career. I expect that to continue against a lineup built to challenge pitchers like him.

We have a lot going for us here. There’s always the risk of one of the best lineups in baseball like the Dodgers running a pitcher out of the game early, especially at home. However, they rarely face a pitcher who will have trouble keeping the ball in the zone like Cole. That’s why I’m such a fan of this pair. Unlike the one meeting over the summer, Cole will be hard-pressed to generate much swing and miss from this patient Dodgers team, and thus won’t be able to go more than five innings.

Max Muncy is the most patient hitter in the Dodgers lineup, so it stands to reason that he would benefit the most from a pitcher who strikes out more than he should, and that’s how we approach it. Muncy came into it in great shape. He struck out 11 times in the previous series against the New York Mets. He should have no problem getting a free pass if this form is moved here.
