Manitoba News: Ottawa, Manitoba is investing in a zero-emissions bus

The federal and provincial governments are investing in a plant in Winnipeg to help build zero-emission buses in Canada.

Premier Wab Kinew, along with federal Northern Affairs Minister Dan Vandal, announced a total investment of $38.4 million in New Flyer, with $23.4 million coming from the province and $15 million from Ottawa.

“The investments we’re making today are about putting the ‘Made in Canada’ stamp on the low-carbon economy,” Kinnew said.

According to a press release, the investment will be used to expand New Flyer’s manufacturing facilities and create 250 direct jobs in Winnipeg and hundreds of indirect jobs. It will also build the zero-emission buses entirely in Winnipeg, instead of ending production elsewhere.

“The final assembly, the finished product, the bus that rolls off the line when it’s ordered by Winnipeg Transit, or the TTC, or all these other transit organizations across the country that will be built here at Transcon, and built by Manitoba workers,” Kinev said.

“Providing Canadians with clean public transportation to get to work and live their lives is key to helping everyone achieve and benefit from a net-zero economy,” Vandal said.

Construction of the expansion will begin in 2024 and is expected to be completed in 2025, the premier said.
