Parents of Utah mother accused of killing husband in his sleep now charged in case

Parents Jennifer GledhillA Utah mother accused of shooting her husband in his sleep after he found out about her extramarital affair has been arrested after authorities say they helped Gledhill cover up the murder.

Thomas Gledhill, 70, and Rosalie Gledhill, 67, were arrested during a traffic stop in Salt Lake County on Thursday, Oct. 24, Cottonwood Heights police said in a news release provided to PEOPLE. Both were jailed on multiple counts of obstruction of justice in connection with the death of Matthew Johnson in September, according to police.

It is unclear whether they have filed a plea or hired attorneys to speak on their behalf.

The parents are accused of helping Jennifer clean out the house where authorities believe she shot Johnson on Sept. 21 and get rid of evidence related to the murder. Their arrests come a little more than a week after the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office announced that Jennifer has been charged with first-degree murder and other crimes in connection with her husband’s murder.

Johnson, a member of the Utah National Guard, was notified of Jennifer’s disappearance on Sept. 28, prosecutors said. previously said in a statement. Jennifer was arrested in early October after an informant who claimed he had an affair with her told police she allegedly confessed to shooting Johnson in his sleep after he found out about the affair, according to prosecutors.

Jennifer also allegedly told the informant that she put her husband’s body in a storage container and placed it in their minivan before burying the body in a shallow grave, prosecutors said. When the informant asked her about the bruises on her body, Jennifer allegedly said she got them while cleaning up the crime scene and moving the body.

According to two affidavits, one for each parent, witnesses allegedly told police that Thomas and Rosalie were seen cleaning their daughter’s home for five hours on Sept. 24, although Rosalie told authorities they were there for about an hour . Both parents denied cleaning the house, according to the affidavit.

Thomas allegedly told investigators during questioning that he had little recollection of that day, the district attorney’s office previously said. Investigators also say cellphone records show Thomas was the only person Jennifer called on the day she is believed to have buried Johnson’s body, the affidavit states.

After searching Jennifer’s home, they allegedly found a blood stain on the carpet under the bed in the master bedroom and noticed that the wall behind the bed was covered in bleach and the mattress in the room was new, according to the release. Prosecutors said Gledhill’s mother allegedly told investigators she bought a mattress for Gledhill after she asked her to, the release said.

Prosecutors believe Johnson was killed on a mattress that was thrown away and remains missing with the victim’s body, according to affidavits against the parents.

Testing shows the blood stain on the carpet was from “one man,” according to the release, but prosecutors said further testing is still underway to confirm whether the stain matches Johnson’s DNA.
