An 82-year-old man was struck by a tractor-trailer in downtown Farmington

FARMINGTON, Maine (WMTW) – A Maine man has died after being struck by a tractor-trailer in Farmington, according to police.

Robert Leso, 82, of Chesterville, was identified as the victim of an accident Monday morning near the US Post Office at 196 Main St.

Police officers reported that around 10:30 a.m., the driver of the tractor was driving north on Main Street when he stopped in front of a pedestrian who was already on the crosswalk.

According to police, the driver started moving after seeing that there were no other pedestrians in the crosswalk. At the same time, Leso drove up from the side of the tractor and drove around the front of the truck, apparently out of sight of the driver.

Police said Leso fell to the ground and was run over by the front wheel of the tractor. Witnesses saw what happened and signaled the driver to stop the truck.

According to police, the driver and witnesses rushed to help and resuscitate Leso, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said that based on a review of traffic camera footage and testimony from several witnesses, there was no indication of driver error.

The crash remains under investigation, but officials said they do not expect any charges to be filed in connection with the crash. The Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit responded to the scene because the tractor-trailer involved in the crash was a commercial vehicle.

“As a result of this incident, Police Chief Kenneth Charles wants to emphasize the need for cooperation between drivers and pedestrians,” the Farmington Police Department said in a statement. “Please slow down, be patient, be aware of your surroundings and don’t get distracted. Both pedestrians and motorists should always maintain eye contact before proceeding.”

Traffic was closed in the area of the crash for about four hours while investigators examined the scene and crews worked to clean up that section of Main Street, police said.
