PHOENIX (AZ Family) — A man died after being hit by a car overnight on Interstate 10 in west Phoenix early Friday morning.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said officers received calls around 3:20 a.m. about a person walking on westbound I-10 near 27th Avenue, crossing the median.

Shortly thereafter, the unidentified man was walking in the eastbound lane when he was hit by a Hyundai SUV. The driver of this car remained at the scene. It is believed that the damage did not cause the accident.

The DPS reported that the man was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. DPS Sergeant Eric Andrews at the scene later confirmed he died at the hospital.

Sergeant Andrews said it was not known why the man was walking on the freeway.

I-10 was closed eastbound near The Stack interchange with I-17. All eastbound traffic was diverted to the northbound I-17 exit.

Police began reopening the freeway around 5:45 a.m
