WEST PARIS — Police are looking for a man who they say dragged an Oxford County deputy into the Rusty Lanterns Market and gas station on Highway 26 Friday night before fleeing.

The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office released a statement Monday saying deputies are looking for 37-year-old Kevin Michael Litchfield Jr. of West Paris on a number of charges after he refused to get out of his vehicle around 9:15 p.m. Friday when he was ordered by Oxford County Sheriff’s Deputy Andre Chess.

“Deputy Chess was aware that Litchfield had an outstanding extradition warrant from the US Marshal’s Office for a probation violation on drug charges. Litchfield was also on federal probation and two bail conditions,” the report said.

Chess spotted Litchfield’s car near the Rusty Lantern and identified the driver as Litchfield, the affidavit said. “Litchfield refused lawful commands to exit the vehicle, resulting in a physical altercation. Litchfield actively struggled with the deputy and resisted arrest.

“During the struggle, Litchfield shifted into gear and sped forward, driving into a nearby field. Deputy Chasse was dragged along the side of the car before falling on the driver’s side – almost running over. Litchfield drove back across the field and back into the parking lot before fleeing northbound on Highway 26 at a high rate of speed,” the statement said.

Authorities say they later found Litchfield’s vehicle abandoned on Fuller Hill Road in Woodstock. A K9 team from the sheriff’s office attempted to track Litchfield, but he was not found.

According to the statement, an adult woman was inside the vehicle with Litchfield, “she was identified. Her role in this incident is still being evaluated.”

Chasse was taken to a Norwegian hospital, treated for gashes on his face and head, as well as minor bruises and contusions, and released, authorities said.

Litchfield is facing additional charges of aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon, assault on a police officer, driving to endanger, refusing to submit to arrest and violating conditions of release, a statement from Maj. Dana Thompson of the sheriff’s office said.

The office is asking anyone who knows or has information about Litchfield’s whereabouts to contact the office at 207-743-9554.
