In Jackson, a man died after being doused with hot asphalt

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – A man has died after being doused with hot asphalt following an apparent dump truck malfunction.

The incident happened Monday morning outside AJ Materials on East McDowell Road in Jackson.

The police say they were called there in connection with an “accident”.

Darrell Sheriff, 41, identified by the Hinds County Coroner, was buried under hot asphalt after the dump truck malfunctioned, authorities said.

“My prayers, my condolences, my thoughts, my heart goes out to his family,” Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said during a news briefing on the incident.

Wade called the situation “terrible.”

Darrell Sheriff’s family did arrive at the scene of the accident, telling the chief that he was a good, hard-working man.

Jackson police are currently investigating, but at this time the death does appear to be accidental, authorities said.
