Grand Forks man pleads not guilty to 4th of July murder – Grand Forks Herald

GRAND FORKS — A man from Grand Forks

accused of murdering another person on the 4th of July

at a downtown bar, waived a preliminary hearing Monday, Nov. 4, and pleaded not guilty to his four felonies after being arraigned.

Nicholas John Narveson, 27, is charged with felony first degree murder, which carries a maximum penalty of life in prison without parole. There is a mandatory minimum sentence of four years.

Narveson is also charged with three Class C felonies: terrorizing with a dangerous weapon, reckless endangerment showing extreme indifference and criminal mischief causing damage between $2,000 and $10,000.

Charges of terrorizing and endangerment carry a two-year mandatory minimum.

Law enforcement was dispatched shortly after 7 p.m. on July 4 to Sledsters Food & Brew for a report of a shooting, according to an affidavit filed in the case. Witnesses reported seeing Narveson pull out a gun, fire several shots at James Ervin Jorgenson and run from the bar.

53-year-old Jorgenson died at the scene.

There were several other patrons in the bar at the time, which the affidavit said created a significant risk of further injury and caused people to fear for their safety. The shootings also damaged businesses.

Narveson was found at a nearby business and taken into custody without incident, the affidavit said.
