The mother of the hunter who was attacked by the dog speaks

Katrina Hammon says her eight-year-old daughter, another child and her adult friend were enjoying Halloween when they saw the house was about to become a scene that would send them to the hospital.

“We go up to the house, there’s a light on in the house, like a driveway light,” Hammon said.

Katrina Hammon said the sidewalk leading to the house was dark.

“I didn’t even see the dog, that’s what really struck me, the dog was all black with a white mouth,” Hammon said.

The attack, which overshadowed Halloween, happened on Thursday evening on Independence Avenue in the northeast of the city.

Katrina says the dog attacked the children as they went for candy just a few feet away from the adults.

“She kind of bit me, bit me,” Hammon said.

Katrina acted on pure instinct and adrenaline, immediately striking the dog away with a toy lightsaber, blood running down her daughter’s arm.

The commotion forced the owners of the house to run out.

“The homeowners came out, grabbed the dog, raised the garage, put the dog in the garage and put up a fence to keep the dog from escaping,” Hammon said.

Thinking ahead, she wanted to know if the dog had been vaccinated, but she says the home owners didn’t answer her questions, only offering hydrogen peroxide for her daughter’s wounds.

“I’m out there on the sidewalk yelling at the homeowner, people walking with kids in strollers and they don’t care,” Hammon said.

“Because a piece of her arm wasn’t torn out, she didn’t break it because she wasn’t pushed, that’s good.”

Katrina says that the dog is in quarantine and the owners will pay a fine. Animal Care Services responded to the scene and collected evidence and is determining appropriate action in the case.
