Derek Carr hit back Sunday after former teammate Michael Thomas tweeted that the Saints linebacker should be “punched” for throwing Chris Olaf.

Olave was injured during the game Sunday afternoon due to an illegal hit by Carolina Panthers cornerback Xavier Woods. Olave couldn’t handle a high throw from Carr in traffic, leaving him vulnerable to defenders.

Olave’s header left him motionless on the field. He was diagnosed with a concussion and taken to a hospital in Charlotte after being carried off the field on a shield.

Olave was eventually released and was cleared to fly back with the Saints to New Orleans. He wrote on the social network to thank his fans for their support.

Further details of Olave’s condition were not known as of Sunday evening. Carolina won the game, 23-22.

Immediately after the play, Thomas ripped Carr on social media, implying that Carr’s throw was what caused Olave’s injury. Thomas played with Carr in 2023 in Carr’s first season with the Saints. He did not hold back in his contempt for his former protector.

Carr heard about Thomas’ comments. In his post-match press conference, he said he hadn’t read them or planned them. But he responded.

“I love Mike. And when he does that, I obviously don’t care about it,” Carr said. “I’ve had so many teammates over the years and he’s like that guy that didn’t get along with me. And I don’t know what I did to him. I don’t know why he feels this way.

“I’m sorry for everything he has to deal with to make him feel like he has to do this. I don’t know. But he never called me during all of this. My phone number never changed. I actually , called him on various occasions. It’s a shame, especially from a player like that, but I hope he gets into the team and he wants to do it.”

Carr then addressed criticism that his throw left Olave vulnerable to injury.

“It’s just something I would never do to a teammate. It was one high shot. The ball went where we said it would go. And Chris, unfortunately, got hit in the head. That’s the way we play.

“I would never do it on purpose. I didn’t give him a bad look… When it comes to the football aspect, I really don’t have an answer for that. But when it comes to just the personal part of it, I just hope he gets what he’s looking for.”

Thomas last played in the NFL with the Saints in 2023 and left in the offseason as a free agent. A three-time Pro Bowler, he remains a free agent at age 31, nine weeks into the NFL season.
