Hathras, Uttar Pradesh:

A 15-year-old boy from Hathras in Uttar Pradesh died a day after he underwent a major surgery at a Delhi hospital to remove 56 strange objects such as watch batteries, blades, nails and other metal fragments from his stomach.

The discovery of multiple foreign objects in the body of Class 9 student Aditi Sharma has left the medical community baffled and his family stunned, the boy’s father Sanchit Sharma, a medical officer from Hathras, told PTI.

According to his father, the boy died a day after the operation at Safdarjung Hospital, when his heartbeat accelerated and his blood pressure dropped alarmingly.

Foreign objects in Aditi’s stomach were found during multiple medical examinations at various hospitals in Uttar Pradesh, Jaipur and Delhi, Sanchit said.

He said his family’s ordeal began after his son complained of severe stomach pain and difficulty breathing.

Sanchit said that Aditya was initially taken to a local hospital in Hathras, from where on doctor’s advice he was later shifted to Jaipur Hospital where the patient was discharged after a brief treatment.

However, when the boy developed symptoms again, the family took him to a hospital in Aligarh, where he underwent surgery to relieve his respiratory discomfort.

A post-operative ultrasound at an Aligarh hospital on October 26 revealed the presence of around 19 objects in Aditi’s body, after which doctors referred him to a more advanced medical facility in Noida. Here, another scan revealed the presence of around 56 metal fragments, prompting the family to rush the boy to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital, where he underwent major surgery on October 27.

“Doctors said that around 56 foreign objects were removed from my son’s body after the surgery at this Delhi hospital. Three more foreign bodies were subsequently removed, surprising even doctors who admitted they did not know how this was medically possible,” he said.

“I must say that the doctors did their best, but perhaps fate had a different plan. My son died a day after the operation in a Delhi hospital when his heart beat rapidly and his blood pressure dropped alarmingly,” said Sanchit.

Sanchit admitted that Aditi’s case baffled even the doctors as there were no signs of trauma in his mouth or throat to indicate whether the minor boy had swallowed it intentionally or accidentally.

He said: “I have lost my only son and am now left with my daughter who, like all of us, is stunned by this terrible, unexplained and mysterious tragedy that has struck us out of nowhere.” He said that Aditya’s unexplained death has raised many questions that have baffled both his family and medical professionals.

The family resides in Ratangarbha Colony in Hathras.

Safdarjung Hospital did not comment on the matter.
