Hong Kong prison chief vows to stand up to violence fearlessly after officer assaulted

Hong Kong’s Correctional Services Department (CSD) has vowed to fearlessly stand up to any form of violent intimidation following a recent gang attack on an officer, its commissioner said after visiting the injured officer.

Correctional Services Commissioner Wong Kwok Hing condemned the violent attack on Sunday during a visit to the United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong, confirming that the officer was in a stable condition.

“The CSD has strongly condemned the lawless violence and we believe that the attackers have openly defied the rule of law and undermined social order,” he said.

“Every employee of the Department of Corrections is a professional law enforcement officer and will never be intimidated by any form of violent threat.

“The Central Bureau of Investigation will defend its position and act in accordance with the law to ensure the maintenance of proper order and discipline in the institution.»

But Wong declined to say whether the officer was attacked because of a personal feud with the attackers, saying the case was still under investigation and it was not appropriate to release further details.

“We will continue to cooperate with police investigators and hope that they will apprehend those responsible for this crime as soon as possible,” he said.
