Patriots look at OL Help

Patriots look at OL Help

The Patriots’ chances of making the playoffs are almost zero. However, that won’t stop the front office from looking for reinforcements before the trade deadline. According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPNThe Patriots are looking for help on the offensive line.

In particular, New England’s front office was considering an acquisition Cam Robinson earlier veteran moved from the Jaguars to the Vikings. The team also reached out to the free agent OL DJ Humphreys, who visited the Giants last week. The Patriots probably won’t overspend on veterans, but the team is at least looking at options that could help keep their defensive backs vertical.

The Patriots’ offensive line has allowed 27 sacks this season, third most in the NFL. While the veteran seat is warmer Jacoby Brissett likely knew he would take his fair share of snaps in 2024, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Patriots were a little more careful with their OL issues with Drake May management of the offense. The third-stringer suffered a concussion last weekend (on a scramble) and given the team’s investment in the QB, they will certainly do everything in their power to keep him healthy moving forward.

While the Patriots didn’t do much to improve their offensive line last offseason, the team also didn’t have much luck on the health front. New England has already used 11 different starters this season, and the various line combinations have naturally led to inconsistent play from the team. Mike Onwenu is the only lineman to receive a plus grade from Pro Football Focus, so a lack of health can’t be entirely to blame for the team’s struggles.

Elsewhere in New England, Fowler says it’s widespread K. J. Osborne is the Patriots player he’s keeping an eye on as we approach the trade deadline. There were rumors of an offseason acquisition already wants out of New England and the veteran was recently demoted to the team’s WR4 or WR5 role upon his return Kendrick Bourne. Osborne has been limited to seven catches in six games this season.
