Coco Gauff addresses gender equality in Saudi Arabia and LGBTQ+ rights ahead of 2024 WTA Finals

Coco Gauff is the youngest singles player at the 2024 WTA Finals.

Coco Gauf arrived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in style and was ready to face her rivals WTA finals 2024. Before going into the details of the match and the schedule, she talked about Saudi Arabia’s gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights. Gauf noted that she is aware of the current state of women and LGBTQ+ issues in the country.

The 20-year-old girl believes that sports can improve the conditions of citizens and provide opportunities for women. She said: “Sports can open doors for people… One of the things I’ve said is that if we come here, we can’t just play our tournament and leave… we have to have a real plan. Gauff also talked about the Future Stars program, where Saudi Arabia will introduce women to sports.

The young American also revealed that she spoke with Her Royal Highness Princess Reema Bandar Al Saud about gender equality and LGBTQ+ rights. Al Saud has been Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the United States since early 2019 and was the first woman to hold the position. She is also a member of the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee and a member of the International Olympic Committee.

Ghauf discussed with Al Saud how to help solve problems in the region. She further informed that it is impossible and this is a nuance if they are trying to change everything. Gauff strongly supported tennis coming to Saudi Arabia as it would help change the lives of female athletes.

The third racket of the world will perform for the third time in a row at the Final WTA tournament. Last year, she reached the semifinals, losing to Jessica Pegula. In her first match, Gauff lost all three of her group stage matches in 2022. This time, she hopes to improve on her result and become the first American to win the title since Serena Williams in 2014.

Gauf in the orange team is nearby Iga Svyatek, Jessica Pegula and Barbora Krejchikova. She will begin her campaign against Pegula on November 3. Gauff will be playing to win and will be hoping to inspire his fans in Saudi Arabia.
