Over 200 people arrested for drunken driving in Vijayawada in a month: Police Commissioner

Police Commissioner NTR has registered cases against 249 persons from October 2 to November 2, 2024 for driving under the influence of alcohol, Police Commissioner SV Rajashekar Babu said on Saturday.

Police conducted special drives at several intersections on MG Road, Eluru Road, BRTS Road, Gollapudi, Ibrahimpatnam, Pipula Road and other areas for the past 30 days and registered cases against those caught driving under the influence, Mr. Rajashekar Babu said. “Out of 249 persons, a fine of Rs 15,000 was imposed on 40 accused and Rs 10,000 was collected from the rest,” he added.

As accidents due to drunken driving are common in the region, more such accidents will take place within the NTR police station and strict action will be taken against the accused, the police commissioner warned. In addition, he stated that students who receive reports for driving while intoxicated will not be eligible for employment, and the driver’s licenses of those who are repeatedly recorded will be revoked.

“Drunken driving causes injuries and in some cases death to passengers and passengers. Courts also take drunk driving cases seriously,” said Mr. Rajashekar Babu.
