MADISON. A Norfolk man who sexually assaulted a girl for five years could face up to six years in prison after pleading guilty in Madison County District Court.

Luis Onate-Rodriguez, 45, pleaded guilty to two counts of third-degree sexual abuse of a child, both of which carry a maximum penalty of three years in prison.

Onate-Rodriguez was charged with one count of second-degree sexual abuse of a child, which carries a maximum sentence of 50 years, but that charge was changed as part of a plea deal. Additionally, as part of the plea agreement, the Madison County District Attorney’s Office will not recommend a penalty at sentencing, which is scheduled for Thursday, January 16.

Onate-Rodriguez was arrested and charged in March after allegations that he inappropriately touched the girl starting in July 2016, when she was 9, and continuing until December 2021, when she was 14.

Matthew Kiernan, a deputy Madison County district attorney, said the victim had been sleeping in a shared bedroom for about three years, during which Onate-Rodriguez would enter the room three to four nights a week and touch the girl sexually.

The victim was alone in her bedroom from July 2019 to December 2021, during which time Onate-Rodriguez continued to enter her room three to four nights a week and sexually assault her.

District Judge Mark Johnson found that the assaults were aggravated in nature, subjecting Onate-Rodriguez to the sex offender registry for life.

Onate-Rodriguez walked free after posting 10 percent of $100,000 bond shortly after his arrest.
