Agatha All Along: Did Wanda Really Save Billy?

Agatha All Along: Did Wanda Really Save Billy?

Agatha All Along answered a lot of questions in the two-part finale, but also left fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a lot of new ones. One of the biggest questions was the origin of Billy Maximoff/Wiccan, who managed to survive as a creation of Wanda Maximoff’s hex reality in Westview by transferring his essence into the body of a recently deceased boy named William Kaplan. Some fans saw the flashback scene of Billy’s resurrection and asked a serious question:

Did Wanda really save Billy?

During Agatha and Billy’s discussion of his resurrection (in episode 6), Agatha implies that Billy’s true nature as a survivor willing to use the available resource (a soulless body) was his defining quality as a witch. This suggests that Billy’s Spirit (due to his powerful abilities) was able to instinctively seek out William Kaplan like a parasite desperately seeking a host body to survive. However, there is a controversial theory that Billy helped bring him back from the dead.

The WandaVision scene and events after the credits Doctor Strange in the multiverse it is suggested that Wanda is uniquely attuned to the spirits or souls of her children – even sensing them in different realities of the multiverse. No wonder, as a mother, Wanda couldn’t give her boys the push they needed to send their souls out into the world. If these two souls were separated during that exile, it could explain why Billy’s first words when he woke up in his new body was to shout “Tommy!”

This isn’t an issue that should become the MCU’s main mystery—it’s more an opportunity for deeper storytelling depth. Assuming future MCU storylines will eventually culminate Wanda, Billy and Tommy meet againit would have resonated more strongly if it had been revealed that Wanda was actively involved in saving her boys – even if she had to break the laws of the natural world to do so. This would appeal to Wanda’s parents everywhere – just as the Agatha finale revealed her (albeit twisted) mother’s heart, which completely changed the character’s image.

Again, learning that Wanda saved Billy will only change things Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – Wanda breaks through reality to find Billy and Tommy – even more tragic. MCU fans might also find it a big bummer that Wanda purposely sent her sons’ spirits to find new bodies, but couldn’t sense where they landed – especially Billy’s.
