Spain’s latest floods: King Charles ‘heartbroken’ as death toll rises; police fear that more bodies are hidden | World news

Eyewitness: Anger grows over flood response – as survivors recount harrowing ordeal

Survivors of devastating floods in Spain told Sky News they were lucky to be alive.

But they are angry they haven’t received more support from the government, emergency services or the military.

They say they feel forgotten and are left without electricity, food or water, despite living a short drive from one of Spain’s largest cities.

Instead, we saw thousands of volunteers helping to clean up some of the devastated cities, while others were left to rely on their own residents to cope with the extreme destruction.

“Tell the world we have nothing,” says one man as we speak in the town of Albal. There are growing calls for nationwide protests against what is seen as a slow government response.

But there are also fascinating stories of survival. In Catarroia we meet Arcaite Iniguez, who has returned from his high school in Valencia due to a bad weather warning.

“At first I was knee-deep in water,” he says. He wanted to check on his grandmother, who lived nearby, but by the time he got to her house, the water was rushing so fast that it swept him away.

“The flow was so fast and the level rose. I grabbed the post of a road sign so I wouldn’t be carried away. Some neighbors tried to help me – they threw a rope, but it broke.

“I was there for 20 minutes. Something hit me – I think it was a car, but I can’t be sure. And then the current got less strong and I was able to jump onto the car.”
