In the world of Westeros, time weaves a complex story. HOTD introduces us to the ancestors of the characters we loved in GOT, set 172 years ago. So how do we go from the dragon-filled skies to the brutal politics of Winterfell? buckle up; The trip through Targaryen history is amazing!

First, we have House Stark. Despite the fact that the Starks did not appear House of the Dragon however, they played a crucial role after the Civil War known as the Dance of Dragons. Cregan Stark, one of their ancestors, had five sons, but tragedy struck when the eldest, Rickon, died. After a series of births, deaths, and competing claims to the throne, Cregan’s fifth son, Brandon, became Lord of Winterfell. This cycle of heartbreak set the stage for the Stark family we’ve come to know, full of courage and honor.

Moving on to House Velarion, this family has not been seen in Game of Thrones, leading many viewers to wonder if they have disappeared from history. But hold your horses! The Velarions survived, weaving their story through several books in A Song of Ice and Fire. After the bloody war, Rhaenyra legitimized Sir Laenor’s bastards, Alyn and Addam. Alin later earned the nickname Oak Fist after winning decisively at Stepstones. Fast forward a hundred years and we see Luceris Velarion serving the Mad King, even though his fleet was tragically lost the night Daenerys was born. The Velarions may not have played major roles, but they remained on the convoluted chessboard of Westeros.

Next, we delve into House Baratheon. Episode 10 “The Black Queen” introduced us to Borros Baratheon, who unexpectedly decided to side with King Aegon over Queen Rhaenyra. Flash forward a century and we see Lionel Baratheon’s daughter caught in a whirlwind of romance and rebellion as her intended suitor, Prince Duncan Targaryen, chooses love over duty, igniting Lionel’s wrath. Although his rebellion was short-lived, it shaped the future of the Baratheons and their undeniable bond with the Targaryens.

Then there’s the ever-looming house of Lannister. Jason and Tyland Lannister, prominent in both series, brought their gold and cunning to King Viserys’ court. Herald Lannister, known as Herald the Golden, was instrumental in creating the wealth that defined his house in game of thrones. Tywin Lannister rose to power over the years, forging a legacy that would reverberate through generations.

We finally arrived at House Targaryen. Despite the countless dragons and drama in the House of the Dragon, only one Targaryen remains at the end of the series. Despite the chaos and conflict, Rhaenyra’s sons, Aegon III and Viserys II, managed to sit on the Iron Throne. Aegon III’s reign was marked by grief and tragedy, including the infamous Summerhall tragedy, which led to even more bloodshed and strife within the Targaryen family.

In summary, the lineage connecting House of Dragon to Game of Thrones is full of heartbreak, political maneuvering, and the eternal quest for power. Each house weaves a thread through the fabric of Westeros, and events reverberate through time, shaping the fates of the characters we’ve come to love (or hate) in the original series. With so many hidden details, it’s clear that the history of these houses is as fascinating as the stories themselves.
