CINCINNATI (AP) — A massive fire under a bridge over the Ohio River closed the busy route between Cincinnati and northern Kentucky on Friday and damaged part of the steel structure. No casualties have been reported.

The fire broke out overnight near a playground under the bridge, closing Interstate 471, according to the Cincinnati Fire Department.

Video shows flames rising more than 40 feet and igniting a short section of the bridge, known for its yellow arches, near downtown Cincinnati. Crews of concrete fell from the bridge and the fire ripped through several of its steel girders, firefighters said.

Matt Bruning, a spokesman for the Ohio Department of Transportation, said the southbound lanes of the Kentucky-bound bridge sustained the most damage and would take weeks to repair.

According to him, it will be necessary to replace at least three beams and part of the roadway.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, said City Fire Chief Frank McKinley. According to him, the flames ignited the mulch, as well as the plastic and wooden structures of the playgrounds under the bridge.

According to him, more than 60 firefighters helped to control the fire.
