Punjab: Illegal arms racket busted, 7 arrested in Amritsar

Sharing details of the operation, Amritsar Commissioner of Police (CP) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said it was acting on intelligence about illegal weapons being smuggled out of Madhya Pradesh and supplied to criminal elements in the state.

Amritsar police busted an inter-state arms smuggling unit linked to US-based company Dilpreet Singh by arresting seven operatives and recovering 12 pistols along with 16 magazines and 23 live rounds from their possession, Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said here. Friday.

The DGP said further investigations are underway to find other people involved in the module and more arrests are expected in the coming days. (HT file)

The arrested were identified as Karanjit Singh alias Danni, Jashandeep Singh alias Maya Chillar, Ishmet Singh alias Rishu, Amritpal Singh alias Spura and Dilpreet Singh alias Dil, all residents of Chhehart, Amritsar; Varinder Singh alias Ravi and Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi, Baba Bakala Sahib in Amritsar.

Yadav said preliminary investigations revealed that the module provided logistical support to various gangs by procuring arms in Madhya Pradesh. Investigation also revealed that accused Karanjit Danni along with his brother Jashandeep Singh and Ishmit were bringing consignments of arms from Madhya Pradesh for onward delivery to various persons on the instructions of American Dilpreet Singh, he added.

The DGP said further investigations are underway to find other people involved in the module and more arrests are expected in the coming days.

Sharing details of the operation, Amritsar Commissioner of Police (CP) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that acting on a tip-off about illegal weapons being smuggled out of Madhya Pradesh and supplied to criminal elements in the state, police teams from Islamabad Police Station and CIA operatives -2 under the supervision of DCP Investigation Harpreet Singh Mander launched a special operation and arrested the accused from Chheharta and Baba Bakal area.

In this regard, an FIR was registered on Tuesday under Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act.
