New details released in 2023 Bowling Green police-involved shooting

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) – The Commonwealth’s Attorney released new details Friday in the Kentucky State Police investigation into a July 2023 shooting that left one person dead and an officer seriously injured.

On July 6, 2023, Bowling Green Police Officer Matt Davis responded to an incident at the American Car-Mart on Russellville Road involving Esteban Lowry.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Cory Beck Bumgarner said in a news release that during the contact with Davis, Lowry brandished a gun and fired several times at Davis, striking him several times.

As a result of the shooting, Davis suffered serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

According to the press release, Lowry was subdued by a bystander at the scene after the shooting. When the scene was cleared, Lowry was found dead and later determined to have died from injuries sustained during the act of strangulation.

According to the Commonwealth’s Attorney, KSP conducted an extensive investigation before and after the shooting, including reviewing security and body camera footage, forensic and ballistics analysis of the scene, medical evidence and interviewing witnesses.

“The results of this investigation were presented to the Warren County Grand Jury on October 30, 2024. “Following this presentation, the Warren County Grand Jury concluded that there was insufficient factual or legal basis to file criminal charges in the death of Esteban D. . .Lowry,” Bumgarner said.

Currently, the criminal proceedings are considered closed.
