Immigration and Customs Enforcement told ABC7 that Sidi Muhammad Abdellahi is a Mauritanian national who was first encountered in the country by the U.S. Border Patrol last year. That’s why federal agencies are now involved in this investigation.

On Thursday, Chicago police announced new terrorism and hate crime charges against Abdullahi. Evidence in his phone is said to indicate he was planning an attack on people of the Jewish faith.

ICE is now involved in the investigation, telling ABC7 it has issued a removal request for the suspect, meaning the agency must be notified if he is released.

“We know he’s not from Chicago, but we’re establishing addresses, where he lived, when he came here … all of those things we’re still working on,” the CPD chief said. Larry Snelling.

Abdellahi has yet to appear in court as he remains in intensive care for injuries sustained during a shootout with police. That shooting came just 20 minutes after he allegedly shot and killed a 39-year-old man near North Washtenaw Avenue.

ICE confirmed that Abdelahi was first found by the US Border Patrol in March 2023 near San Ysidro, California.

Cook County Prosecutor Kim Fox said her team was not ready to comment on the suspect’s immigration status.

“At the next court hearing, we intend, as we did two days ago, to fully set out the proposal, which will include this level of detail. We will release that information next week,” Fox said.

While local authorities continue to cooperate with federal agencies in the investigation, Chicago police do not believe there is a broader terrorist threat.

“The evidence we have now is that he was working alone. We don’t want anyone out there for fear of the network of people who are involved in this activity,” Snelling said.

Abdellahi is due back in court next week while he remains in hospital.

Additional federal charges may come into play during the investigation.
